Study in Lithuania After Class 12: A Guide for Indian Students

news-image

Studying abroad after Class 12 involves more than choosing a country. You need a course that matches your school subjects, a realistic budget and enough time to complete admission and immigration formalities.

Lithuania offers English-taught undergraduate programmes that Indian students can explore. However, admission requirements differ between institutions and courses, so your application should begin with a careful eligibility check.

This guide explains how to study in Lithuania after Class 12, including course selection, academic requirements, documents, costs, scholarships and residence permits.

Can Indian Students Study in Lithuania After Class 12?

Indian students can apply for undergraduate study after completing a secondary qualification that provides access to higher education in India. Universities then assess country-specific requirements, academic results, language proficiency and any additional programme requirements.

For example, Vilnius University requires an eligible secondary qualification and approved language evidence. Some programmes have additional selection criteria.

Before applying, confirm:

  • Whether your Class 12 qualification meets the university’s requirements.
  • Which subjects and marks count towards admission.
  • Whether an entrance examination or interview is required.
  • Which English-language qualifications are accepted.
  • Whether the university applies graduation-recency restrictions.

Meeting minimum requirements makes you eligible for consideration; it does not guarantee admission.

Why Consider Lithuania for Undergraduate Study?

Lithuania may suit Indian students looking for an English-taught degree in Europe who are willing to compare programmes carefully.

The official Study in Lithuania programme directory provides a starting point for exploring institutions and degree options. Confirm the teaching language and course details on the university’s own website.

When comparing programmes, look beyond the course title. Examine:

  • Compulsory modules and available specialisations.
  • Teaching and assessment methods.
  • Practical projects and internship arrangements.
  • Annual tuition and additional charges.
  • Accommodation and international student support.
  • Requirements for further study or professional practice.

A useful shortlist should bring together your academic interests, eligibility and family budget.

Admission Requirements for CBSE, ISC and State Board Students

Students from CBSE, ISC and Indian state boards should check the receiving university’s country-specific requirements. There is no single Class 12 percentage that guarantees admission across Lithuania.

Your overall result may be only one part of the assessment. Universities can evaluate mathematics, English and other relevant subjects separately.

A Programme-Specific Admission Example

Kaunas University of Technology’s Informatics programme currently lists:

  • A high-school certificate.
  • More than 60% in each entry subject.
  • A maximum of three years since high-school graduation.
  • IELTS 5.5 or above, TOEFL 75 or above, CEFR B2 or equivalent.
  • A selection structure that includes a mathematics entrance examination.

These requirements apply to that programme and should not be presented as national admission rules. Check the official KTU Informatics page for current details.

Applying Before Class 12 Results Are Available

Contact admissions early if your final results will arrive close to the application deadline.

Vilnius University provides guidance allowing some graduating applicants to submit recent transcripts and confirmation of expected graduation. Students must check whether their particular situation qualifies.

If you receive a conditional offer, record every outstanding requirement and its deadline. You will still need to provide acceptable final documents.

Applying With a Study Gap

Check restrictions on the time since graduation before paying an application fee.

Prepare a clear explanation of your gap, supported by genuine employment, training or other relevant records where available. Avoid assuming that every university accepts the same gap length.

Choosing a Course Based on Your Class 12 Stream

Your Class 12 stream can guide your search, but the programme’s published prerequisites should determine eligibility.

The following table is a shortlisting guide rather than an admission guarantee.

Class 12 background Subject areas to explore What to check
Science with Mathematics Computing, informatics, engineering and technology Mathematics requirements, relevant science subjects and entrance tests
Science with Biology Life sciences, biotechnology and suitable health-related programmes Biology and chemistry requirements, teaching language and professional recognition
Commerce with Mathematics Business, economics, finance and management Mathematics prerequisites and quantitative modules
Commerce without Mathematics Suitable business, management or communication programmes Whether mathematics is compulsory
Humanities or Arts Communication, languages, social sciences and creative fields Subject requirements, writing tasks, portfolios or interviews

Read the curriculum before choosing a degree. A business programme may contain substantial statistics, while a computing degree can require intensive mathematics.

For a regulated profession, investigate the qualification and licensing pathway in the country where you intend to practise before committing to a course.

Lithuanian Universities to Include in Your Research

Three institutions you can investigate through official sources are:

  • Vilnius University: Explore its undergraduate and integrated study catalogue, country requirements and programme-level selection criteria.
  • Kaunas University of Technology: Review relevant technology programmes, including Informatics.
  • VILNIUS TECH: Explore its English-taught undergraduate and integrated options in engineering, technology and business.

Start with the VILNIUS TECH international studies page when researching its courses.

Ask each university about the exact degree awarded, programme duration, practical learning opportunities and accommodation availability. Evaluate the course itself alongside the institution’s reputation.

Documents Required for Admission

Create separate checklists for university admission, qualification recognition and your residence-permit application. These processes may request different documents.

  • Valid passport.
  • Class 10 certificate and marksheet.
  • Class 12 certificate and marksheet.
  • Accepted English-language evidence.
  • Motivation letter, if required.
  • References, portfolio or other programme-specific material.
  • Study-gap supporting documents, where relevant.
  • Required certified copies, apostilles and translations.

Lithuania’s Centre for Quality Assessment in Higher Education, known as SKVC, lists the following under its India-specific secondary education requirements:

  • Class 10 certificate with marksheet.
  • Apostilled original Class 12 examination certificate with marksheet. skvc.lrv.lt

Ask your university whether it handles academic recognition or whether you must apply through SKVC. Recognition and admission are separate processes; recognition does not guarantee a study place.

Check name spellings, dates of birth and certificate details early to prevent avoidable requests for clarification.

English Requirements and Studying Without IELTS

An alternative to IELTS is possible only when your selected university and programme accept it.

  • Accepted examinations or alternative evidence.
  • Minimum overall and component scores.
  • Test validity periods.
  • Conditions for any language-test exemption.

If you want to use a Medium of Instruction certificate, obtain written confirmation that it is acceptable. English-medium schooling does not create a universal exemption.

Vilnius University, for example, requires applicants to demonstrate proficiency through its approved methods.

Being admitted without IELTS does not mean that language evidence is unnecessary.

Cost of Studying in Lithuania After Class 12

Build your budget around the actual fee for your chosen programme and applicant category.

For example, VILNIUS TECH publishes these annual tuition fees for non-EU students for 2026–2027:

Undergraduate programme category Annual tuition
Business Management, Economics Engineering, Finance Engineering and specified related programmes €3,950
Engineering, IT and technology bachelor’s programmes €4,950
Professional bachelor’s in Port and Shipping Engineering Management €3,600
Other professional bachelor’s programmes €4,380

Living Expenses

The European Commission’s Lithuania study profile estimates living expenses at approximately €500–€800 per month, covering accommodation, food, study materials, transport and personal expenses. Actual spending depends on your housing and lifestyle.

That range corresponds to €6,000–€9,600 over 12 months.

For illustration, tuition of €4,950 plus those living expenses gives an annual subtotal of €10,950–€14,550. This calculation excludes additional costs and is not the official financial requirement for a residence permit.

Additional Expenses to Include

Budget separately for:

  • Application and registration charges.
  • English tests and document preparation.
  • Residence-permit and service charges.
  • Health insurance and flights.
  • Accommodation deposits and initial purchases.
  • Winter clothing and an emergency reserve.

For an INR budget, use your bank’s current EUR payment rate and allow for transfer fees and currency changes.

Calculate the cost of the entire degree, rather than only the first year.

Scholarships for Indian Undergraduate Applicants

Check scholarship eligibility by nationality, degree level, programme and intake.

A scholarship advertised for master’s study or a short exchange does not automatically fund a full bachelor’s degree.

VILNIUS TECH’s published 2026–2027 undergraduate scholarship call offered full tuition scholarships and partial awards covering 50% or 25% of tuition. Its deadline was 20 April 2026, which has already passed. Applicants targeting a later intake should check the relevant new call.

Before relying on an award, confirm:

  • Whether Indian applicants are eligible.
  • Whether your programme is included.
  • Whether living expenses are covered.
  • Whether a separate application is required.
  • What performance is needed to retain funding.

Plan a self-funded budget unless you have written confirmation of financial support.

Application Timeline and Intakes

Confirm the intake for your exact programme. Vilnius University currently states that its international admissions have one intake per academic year; check other institutions individually.

Use this as a preparation schedule, rather than an official deadline list.

Time before the intended course start Suggested preparation
9–12 months Compare courses, prerequisites and full-degree costs
6–9 months Prepare language evidence, passport and academic documents
4–6 months Apply within published deadlines and complete selection tasks
After receiving an offer Meet conditions, review payment terms and prepare the residence application
Before departure Confirm immigration approval, accommodation and enrolment arrangements

If your Class 12 results arrive close to the deadline, ask admissions about provisional documents early.

Avoid choosing an unsuitable course simply because its application window remains open.

Lithuania Student Residence Permit for Indian Applicants

For Indian students entering full-time higher education, the relevant immigration route is a temporary residence permit, commonly called a TRP.

Lithuania’s Migration Department states that national D visas are no longer issued for this full-time study category. Follow current residence-permit guidance rather than older student-visa checklists.

The Embassy of Lithuania in India directs applicants to the Migration Department for TRP information and appointment arrangements.

Check the applicable requirements for university mediation, financial evidence, insurance, accommodation, criminal-record documents and authentication.

Your admission offer and immigration approval are separate decisions. Read tuition refund conditions, retain payment records and confirm the authorised submission route before booking travel.

Working While Studying in Lithuania

Lithuania changed its student work rules in 2026.

A Migration Department notice dated 9 September 2026 states that:

  • First- and second-year bachelor’s students covered by the new rules may work up to 20 hours per week.
  • Holidays and practical training are excluded from that limit.
  • Third- and fourth-year bachelor’s students may work up to 40 hours per week.

The notice specifies that the new first- and second-year restriction applies to foreign students who received their Lithuanian TRP after 22 May 2026. Check how the rules apply to your permit and study year.

Treat employment income as supplementary. Finding suitable work can take time, and your timetable, skills and language ability affect your options.

Your study plan should remain affordable without immediate employment.

Preparing for Student Life in Lithuania

Ask about university accommodation as soon as you receive an offer.

When comparing private housing, check rent, deposits, utilities, transport connections and contract conditions.

Before departure:

  • Confirm enrolment and orientation dates.
  • Save university and accommodation contact details.
  • Carry required original documents and secure digital copies.
  • Check insurance coverage and emergency arrangements.
  • Plan your initial transport and access to money.
  • Learn basic Lithuanian for everyday situations.

If you will still be under 18 when applying or travelling, ask the university and relevant authorities about parental consent and additional arrangements.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Treating one percentage as a national admission guarantee.
  • Ignoring compulsory subjects or entrance tests.
  • Assuming English-medium schooling guarantees an IELTS exemption.
  • Calculating tuition without living costs and initial expenses.
  • Depending on part-time employment to fund the degree.
  • Using an outdated national D visa checklist.
  • Paying fees without checking official invoices and refund terms.
  • Assuming admission guarantees immigration approval or employment.
